Millie is my 15 year old border collie. I knew she was getting old, so it's not a big surprise. she's been having joint problems for several years and I thought I was going to have to put her to sleep eventually if she ever got too bad to where she couldn't get around. but that never happened, she's been mobile and gets around fine with some pain that usually rimadyl alleviates every now and then.
she was fine all day yesterday like nothing was wrong, even begging for jerky treats with Bea and Booboo (the little ones) at about 7PM last night. but when it was time for bed around 11PM, she was pretty lethargic and looked kind of down trodden.. got in her bed and went to sleep. about an hr later she got up and went out the pet door; nothing unusual as she does that all the time since she likes the cold weather on the patio. Then about 2AM, Bea got up and jumped off the bed, and I knew I needed to take her out or she'd go find a place to hide a pee spot. so I walked out on the patio, and millie was laying about 4 ft away just like I've seen her do a 1000 times on her rug on the patio in the cool night air. but as bea went outside, she just laid there... so I said "come on Mil, you wanna go outside?" (referring to the backyard off the screened patio). and she didn't move. so I went over to check her and she wasn't breathing,, her body was still warm but her jaw was stiff and her mouth was dry. so today I will bury her once it gets light outside.
I'm pretty sure she didn't suffer, or if she did it wasn't long. my guess is a heart attack or stroke being 15 years old. she was happy as a clam at 7PM, lethargic by 11PM, then I found her at 2AM. and she died on one of her fav spots-on her rug on the patio in the cool night air 4 ft from the pet door to the house.
RIP Millie, I bet you're saying hello to your friend Scoot about now. Scoot was her dachshund friend for most of her life, Scoot died in March 2007 at age 14. they were companions for over a decade. It's 3AM now, so she's only been gone a few hours. I pray they are reunited again now.

I'm really ok with her passing. I know she lived a long a happy, was never for want of anything that she didn't get, and left this world on her terms. Yesterday she was business as usual all day running around with Bea in the yard and digging moles, ate dinner with her pals in the kitchen.. then was begging for hamburger scraps as I fried up some burgers on the stove last night. All 3 of them shared licking the defrost plate --> the blood and hamburger bits that got a little cooked when the hamburger defrosted.. then later while I was on the couch, she was right there with the others begging for their nightly treats of chicken jerky and milk bones. She even went outside later to go to the bathroom just like normal. really didn't notice anything was wrong until we got ready for bed around 11PM, so what ever took place it happened in a matter of hours and she passed. I'd say that would be the way to do it when it's your time. No lingering sickness and pain; and surrounded by the place and people you love. _________________ Scoot---------------Bea

Sorry about Millie, but like you said, she lived a long time, and didn't suffer. I'm sure from the way you were describing the burger plate and treats that she was not neglected and had a full life. She and Scoot are probably catching up on things. I guess the other two have been looking for her today. I think some times its hardest watching their "pals" looking for them, and not understanding.
Give the other two a good hug, it'll make you feel better. I guess your parents are missing Millie too.
Hope things are well otherwise. _________________ Take care,

Mike I'm sorry to hear about Millie. She lived a very long life and was a friend for a long time to you and Scoot and the other babies. I'm sure she will be missed very much by all. Sounds like she had a very nice nite with good food and treats and playing and being loved by you up until the end. She is at peace now and I'm sure playing with Scoot.
Rest in peace Millie. _________________ Karen,Lady,Buster and Missy |

I bet the first thing she did at the pearly gates was hook up with scoot, and off they went to get a free bowl of bacon topped with burger bits and cheese at the 24 hr free canine buffet on St Peter's avenue. _________________ Scoot---------------Bea

I'll bet they're STILL at that free 24 hour buffet Mike! LOL! After all, they can't get sick from too much food now, right? _________________ Hugs!

Friday, I was thinking about how nice it was that Millie didn't suffer and had a good day. We should all be so lucky for our pets or ourselves when it is time.
Hope all is well, know y'all are still missing Millie (except Scoot). _________________ Take care,
